| Janna Tilson Weinstein is a New York City-based ceramist.
Janna spent part of her early career in an art furniture gallery. She was drawn to functional art by its power to transform the everyday into design, art, and sculpture. That viewpoint led Janna to re-examine all of the objects in her daily life in light of the balance between form and function, especially tableware.
Exploring that dynamic eventually led Janna to ceramics. To focus exclusively on her artwork, she left her job in advertising in 2001 and founded Tilson Design Works.
Janna’s work is handmade and incorporates three basic ceramic techniques: slab, pinch and coil. Tilson Design Works are texturally driven and have an organic quality. Each piece is unique with mild variations. While the majority of her work continues to be functional, Janna creates sculpture as well. She has shown in galleries in several major cities and has received various awards.
Janna embraces the natural process drawing on Japanese aesthetic, wabi-sabi. The imperfections of each piece act as a reminder of our own frailties and the futility of our self-importance.
