CHARLOTTE BARKOWSKI

Charlotte Barkowski was born in Belgium. She spent most of her youth and adolescence in Canada where she acquired a taste for freedom, nature, and open spaces. On her return to Europe she studied at the Beaux Arts in Tournai, Belgium before undertaking a career as an assistant film director in Paris.

In 1998 she decided to settle in Marrakech and created the brand of Akkal Ceramics (which means “Earth” in the Berber language). She began by learning how to pot in a potter’s village and then by designing objects which are crafted by Moroccan potters. Very quickly she decided to create her own workshop: one potter, one wheel, one wood-burning oven and some rudimentary techniques. Thus, she began her Akkal adventure. Little by little success came and the workshop grew.

Today, Akkal has a staff of over 50 people. More than 15 cubic metres of merchandise leave from its workshops everyday, to be sold and sent to the four corners of the globe (Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the Emirates).

Akkal continues to push its spirit, technique, and know-how in the pure tradition of Moroccan potters. Beginning with a noble earth, selected for its purity, each piece produced in Akkal workshops are handcrafted. The great richness of the brand is the originality and diversity of its colors. The glazes come from different parts of the world and create a vast range of colors which permit creations to be easily adaptable to different decors and tabletops.

All products can be created in any of the colors shown. Items are made to order. Akkal ceramics are of exceptionally high quality and produce a finish both beautiful and practical that can be machine washed as well as micro waved.

Kkooll Collections is the US distributor of Akkal Ceramics.
